A wand that hisses but produces weak, watery steam — or none at all — is usually a cleaning issue rather than a mechanical one. Work through these before assuming a part has failed.

01Clogged steam tip holes

Dried milk residue is the number one cause of weak steam. Even a single partially blocked hole in the tip noticeably reduces the turbulence needed to create microfoam.

Quick check Look closely at each hole in the tip under good light. A toothpick or the pin often included with your machine can clear dried residue — never use anything metal that could scratch or widen the holes.

02Not purging before and after use

A quick burst of steam into a cloth before frothing clears any condensation sitting in the wand from the last use. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons steam feels weak at the very start of a session.

03Insufficient boiler pressure or temperature

If your machine has a pressure gauge, check that it reaches the steam-ready zone (commonly marked on single-boiler machines) before you begin frothing. Machines need time to build steam pressure after brewing a shot — frothing too soon after pulling a shot is a common culprit.

04Scale buildup inside the wand or boiler

Mineral deposits inside the steam wand or the boiler itself restrict flow the same way they restrict water flow elsewhere in the machine. If steam has gradually weakened over weeks rather than stopped suddenly, scale is a strong suspect — see our descaling guide.

05Worn wand gasket or seal

If steam is escaping from where the wand attaches to the machine rather than from the tip, the seal at that joint may have worn out and needs replacing.
