A machine that sat unused for weeks, months, or years often needs more than just plugging back in โ internal seals and valves can stick or develop mineral deposits during idle time.
01Full re-priming needed
Per the official setup process: fill the reservoir, open the steam wand, and run the pump via the hot water function until a steady stream comes through โ this confirms the boiler is genuinely full. Then run water through the group head separately until at least 4oz has passed through before inserting your portafilter.
02Mineral deposits from prolonged storage
Water left sitting in the boiler for extended storage periods can leave deposits even if the machine was clean when stored. A thorough descale (see our descaling guide) run 2-3 times in succession is often necessary after long storage, more than a single routine cycle would normally require.
03Seals dried out or stuck
Rubber seals and gaskets can dry out and lose flexibility during long idle periods, affecting pressure even after descaling. If pressure remains weak after thorough re-priming and multiple descale cycles, the group head gasket and solenoid seals are worth inspecting โ see our general gasket replacement guide.
