Where exactly the water appears tells you most of what you need to know โ€” during extraction versus continuously, and at the portafilter versus underneath the machine.

01Leaking during extraction, from the portafilter

This points to the group head gasket, which compresses and hardens with use. Clean the group head and gasket area of coffee residue first โ€” often listed in Rancilio's own troubleshooting as a contributing cause โ€” and replace the gasket if it's visibly flattened or cracked. See our general gasket replacement guide.

02Continuous drip underneath, machine idle

A drip that occurs even when the machine isn't actively brewing points to the solenoid valve not sealing fully โ€” often from scale or coffee sediment preventing it from closing completely. Descaling (see our descaling guide) is the first thing to try.

03Steam valve or wand leak

If the leak occurs from the steam tip specifically, whether during use or at idle, the steam valve typically needs a rebuild kit (replacing internal seals) rather than a simple clean โ€” a well-documented, inexpensive repair on this model given decades of parts availability.
