This isn't usually a malfunction — most Classic Pro units built before 2024 ship from the factory with the over-pressure valve (OPV) set to around 12 bar, well above the 9 bar the Specialty Coffee Association considers ideal for extraction. This causes fast, channeling, often bitter shots that feel like a pressure problem.

Check your build year first If your Classic Pro or Evo Pro was built in 2024 or later, it likely already ships at 9 bar from the factory and doesn't need this adjustment. Verify with a pressure gauge portafilter before making any changes.

01Confirm the problem with a gauge

A pressure gauge portafilter (an inexpensive accessory) attached in place of your normal portafilter lets you read static pressure directly. Prime and warm up the machine fully (at least 20 minutes) before testing, with no basket in the portafilter to avoid false readings.

02Access the OPV

Unplug the machine and wait at least 15 minutes for the boiler to cool. Remove the top cover (two Phillips screws on the rear). The OPV is a brass cylinder near the pump, usually on the side of the machine.

03Adjust the pressure

Insert a 5mm hex key into the adjustment screw and turn anticlockwise approximately 270° (three-quarters of a turn) as a starting point — this typically brings static pressure down to roughly 9-10 bar (which reads as about 9 bar dynamic pressure during an actual shot).

Go gradually if you're unsure Small adjustments are safer than one large turn. Reassemble, test with the gauge, and readjust in smaller increments if you're not hitting your target the first time.

04Re-dial your grind after adjusting

Lower pressure means less resistance against the puck, so shots will run noticeably faster at your old grind setting. Grind finer to bring your shot time back to the target 25-30 seconds — this is expected and not a sign the adjustment failed.
