No lights, no pump sound, nothing happens when you press POWER โ€” this is almost always electrical, not mechanical. Work through these before assuming the machine has failed outright.

01Check the outlet and cord first

Plug a different appliance into the same outlet. If that also fails, the outlet or a tripped breaker is the real problem. Inspect the full length of the power cord for cuts or damage near where it enters the machine base.

02Water tank not seated correctly

On the Barista Express specifically, the water tank must push down completely and lock into place โ€” if it's slightly out of position, some units won't power on at all as a safety measure. Remove the tank, refill it, and reseat it firmly until you hear/feel it click.

Quick check Confirm the tank clicks fully home rather than just resting in the slot. This is one of the most common "dead machine" causes reported for this specific model.

03Blown thermal fuse

If the outlet, cord, and tank are all fine, a blown internal thermal fuse โ€” often the result of long-term scale buildup overworking the heating element โ€” can cut power permanently. This requires opening the casing, which may affect your warranty; check Breville's official manual or contact Breville support before proceeding if the machine is still under warranty.

Before you open anything Unplug and let the machine cool completely. If it's within warranty, contacting Breville directly is safer than DIY disassembly.
