If shots are pulling too fast even at the finest grind setting, the built-in grinder likely needs recalibrating rather than replacing โ this model has an adjustable upper burr specifically for extending its fine-grind range.
01Adjust the upper burr
The Barista Express has a feature allowing you to extend the grind range beyond the standard dial by manually adjusting the upper burr position. Breville recommends making only one adjustment at a time โ set GRIND SIZE to its finest dial position first, then make small upper-burr adjustments and test after each one.
02Burrs clogged with oil buildup
Oily residue from beans can build up on the burrs over time and interfere with consistent fine grinding. Run the grinder cleaning cycle (triggered when the CLEAN light flashes) to clear built-up oils โ this is a different procedure than the water-side descale cycle.
03Blockage between burrs and grinder outlet
A blockage in the chute between the grinding burrs and where grounds exit into the portafilter can also mimic a "won't grind fine" symptom, since coarser particles pass through more easily than fine ones. This requires the 10mm socket tool included with the machine to access โ check your instruction manual for the exact disassembly steps, and take care as the burrs are extremely sharp.
04Burrs genuinely worn out
If grind consistency has been declining gradually over many months alongside louder, hotter grinding, the burrs themselves may simply be worn โ see our general dull burrs guide for how to confirm this.
