Descale mode only activates under specific conditions. If the button combo isn't working, check these before assuming something's broken.

01The CLEAN light must be solid, not flashing

A flashing CLEAN light means the machine wants a grinder cleaning cycle, not a descale โ€” these are two different procedures on this model. Descale mode only triggers when the light is solid on.

02Correct button sequence

With the machine powered on and the CLEAN light solid, hold down all three of the 1 CUP, 2 CUP, and POWER buttons together for several seconds until the lights change pattern, confirming descale mode has started. A partial or too-brief press won't register.

Quick check Make sure the water tank has enough capacity for the full cycle (Breville specifies filling with descaling solution per their instructions) before starting โ€” an insufficient water level can interrupt or prevent the cycle from beginning.

03Machine needs to be in standby, not mid-brew

Ensure no other function is active and the machine is fully idle before attempting the button combo. Trying to trigger descale mode while the grinder or pump is still running from a previous action won't register.

If it still won't trigger A persistent failure to enter descale mode despite correct timing and an idle machine can point to a control board issue โ€” check Breville's official support page for warranty service options.
