Backflushing pushes water (and, periodically, a cleaning agent) backward through the group head to flush coffee oils out of the valve and internal pathway โ€” the same oils that build up and eventually turn shots stale or bitter regardless of how fresh your beans are.

01Do you have a three-way valve?

Backflushing with a blind basket only works on machines with a three-way solenoid valve (most semi-automatic prosumer and commercial-style machines). If you're not sure, check your manual โ€” machines without one can be damaged by this process, and should instead have baskets soaked separately in cleaning solution.

02What you need

03The backflush process

  1. Remove the regular basket from your portafilter and insert the blind basket instead.
  2. Add a dose of cleaning powder or a tablet to the blind basket, if doing a full clean (skip this for a quick daily rinse โ€” plain water works for that).
  3. Lock the portafilter into the group head as normal.
  4. Run the brew cycle for about 5โ€“10 seconds, then stop it. Because the basket is solid, water and any cleaning solution get forced back up into the group head and three-way valve instead of flowing through.
  5. Stop and let it sit for a few seconds, then repeat 5โ€“6 times.
  6. Remove the portafilter, rinse the blind basket thoroughly, and run several plain-water cycles afterward to flush out any remaining cleaning solution.
How often A quick plain-water backflush after each session is good practice; a full backflush with cleaning solution once a week for home use is a reasonable baseline โ€” more often with heavy daily use.
Don't skip the final rinse Leftover cleaning solution in the group head will taste soapy and unpleasant in your next shot. Always finish with several cycles of plain water only, no basket needed for this final step.

Backflushing is one of the highest-value, lowest-effort maintenance habits you can build โ€” most home baristas who complain of "stale-tasting" shots despite fresh beans are simply overdue for one.
